Biografia de U2
Grupo de rock irlandés que alcanzó fama mundial durante los años ochenta y los noventa.
Desde Dublín (Irlanda) la última gran banda de pop-rock, encabezada por Bono (cantante), y con The Edge (guitarra), Adam Clayton (Bajo) y Larry Mullen Jr. (batería).
Ellos han creado algunos de los mejores discos hechos jamás: The Joshua Tree, Achtung baby, y canciones que nunca se pasarán de moda como el gran Pride (In the name of love), With or without U, One, Lemon, ... y así hasta una lista interminable.
Todo comenzó en el verano de 1976 en Dublín, Irlanda. Larry Mullen colocó un anuncio en la escuela Mount Temple. Larry tocaba la batería y pedía músicos que tuvieran ganas de embarcarse en una banda. A la nota respondieron cuatro muchachos: Paul Hewson, Dave Evans, Dick Evans y Adam Clayton. Todo el mundo conocía a Paul como Bono y a Dave como The Egde; ellos se convertirían en los pilares del grupo. La cosa funcionó y entre los cinco crearon Feedback. Muy pronto Dyck, el hermano de Dave, abandonó la banda para formar otro grupo. Bono, The Edge, Adam y Larry cambiaron su nombre por U2, "tú también" traducido al castellano, y comenzaron a tomarse la música más en serio.
En 1978 Bono suspende la asignatura de lengua irlandés y no puedo ingresar en la Universidad. Sería entonces cuando plantease al resto de sus compañeros la posibilidad de dedicarse plenamente a la música, hacerlo de forma profesional. Por unas 25 libras los muchachos se subían al escenario y divertían a la gente a la vez que ellos cumplían su sueño. Tras diversas actuaciones en pubs y salas de Dublín decidieron participar en el Guiness and Harp, un concurso musical cuyo premio era ni más ni menos que un contrato de grabación con la CBS. Con gran facilidad se alzaron con el premio y pronto sacaron su primer single U2:3, con el que ocuparon los primeros puestos de las listas de ventas.
En 1979 decidieron probar suerte en Londres y tras unos cuantos conciertos en los que el público brilló por su ausencia a la segunda fue la vencida. En su segunda estancia en la capital británica lograron firmar un contrato con Island.
En 1980 editan su primer disco, Boy, y comienzan una gira por Inglaterra recorriendo todo el país en autobús. Tras este tour, en 1981 llega su segundo álbum, October, con el que llegan a las 200.000 copias. El éxito es tal que ponen camino a los Estados Unidos para presentar su trabajo pero antes de partir su manager tuvo que convencerles para que no dejaran el mundo musical. Sus convicciones religiosas les habían hecho plantearse la posibilidad de abandonar su carrera aunque finalmente no lo hicieron y lograron compaginarlas con la música. Un año después inician una gira por Irlanda. Sería en Dublín, la capital irlandesa donde presentarán Sunday Bloody Sunday un grito pacifista contrario a la violencia que sacudía Irlanda. En 1983 llega War y al año siguiente The Unforgettable Fire, un disco que marcaría un punto de inflexión en la carrera de la banda mostrando a un grupo mucho más maduro.
En 1984 crean Mother Records, su propio sello discográfico. Un año después vuelven a mostrar su lado más solidario y participan con un gran éxito en el concierto benéfico Live Aid.
En 1987 llega el disco de mayor éxito de la banda, que les daría el número uno en Estados Unido y del que vendieron 50 millones de copias. U2 publicaba The Joshua Tree, un álbum ya mítico en la trayectoria de la banda. Al año siguiente y tras la gira de The Joshua Tree llegó Rattle and hum, un disco y un vídeo grabado durante el tour.
Pasarían tres años y tendría que llegar 1991 para que saliera Achtung Baby. U2 respondió a las expectativas y logró uno de sus mejores discos. Durante la gira de presentación del álbum se grabó el que sería su siguiente disco Zooropa. Tras Zooropa la banda se tomó un descanso activo y se dedicó a trabajar para las bandas sonoras de Misión Imposible y Batman Forever.
En 1997 llegaría Pop con un primer single, Discotheque, que marcaba un nuevo sonido de la banda. Rápidamente se embarcaron en una de las giras presentación más espectaculares de las que la banda haya realizado hasta el momento. En 1998 llegó U2: The besto of 1980 - 1990 la primera parte del recopilatorio de la banda en el que se recogían sus primeros diez años de vida. En el año 2001 presentaron nueva gira, Elevation Tour, y nuevo disco All that you can't leave behind. En el 2002 aparece la segunda parte de sus grandes éxitos, U2: The best of 1990 - 2000.
