Nombre : Gordon Matthew Summoner

El apodo de Sting, que después adoptaría como su nombre artístico, se lo pusieron sus amigos por el suéter a rayas negras y amarillas que siempre traía y con el que parecía un abejorro. Se acercó a la música siguiendo el camino de The Beatles y The Rolling Stones, aunque sus comienzos, y el resto de su carrera solista, estuvieron ligados al jazz. Menor de cuatro hermanos, con padre ingeniero y madre peluquera, en su niñez fue conocido como “el hijo del lechero”.
Desde sus inicios profesionales, simultaneaba su trabajo como profesor de español en un instituto con el de entrenador de fútbol, a la vez que tocaba por las noches en una orquesta de jazz de su ciudad.
Tras conocer en Londres a Stewart Copeland, crean en 1976 el fabuloso grupo llamado 'The Police'. Police comienza su historia en Londres. En la capital británica se unieron tres jóvenes músicos: el guitarrista francés Henry Padovani, Sting (que tocaba el contrabajo) y Stewart Copeland.
Comienzan subiéndose al carro del 'punk', de moda en aquella época, pera tanto Sting como Stewart odiaban la falta de calidad de aquel movimiento. Para mejorar en su propio estilo contratan a un conocido guitarrista, Andy Summers.
Su siguiente paso hacia el estrellato lo dieron al teñirse el pelo de rubio para un anuncio de chicles. Aquel sería su look durante varios años.
Poco después sacan su primer gran éxito, 'Roxanne', una desesperada canción de amor a una prostituta, un tema que fue censurado en todas las emisoras de habla inglesa, al igual que su siguiente tema, 'Can't Stand Losing You'.
En 1978 publican su primer álbum, 'Outlandos D'Amour', que se convirtió en un gran éxito de ventas. En este disco se mezclaban aires de jazz, reggae y rock.
Al año siguiente sacan su segundo disco, 'Regatta De Blanc', tras el que inician su primera gran gira. Un año después editan 'Zenyatta Mondatta', un disco que hicieron a disgusto y por presiones de la compañía, a pesar de que contenía algún tema de calidad.
En 1981 publican 'Ghost In The Machine' y en 1983 'Sinchronicity', su último disco y que contenía el mayor éxito de la banda, 'Every Breath You Take'. Este disco fue grabado en Canadá y fue número uno en Inglaterra y en Estados Unidos durante 17 semanas, consiguiendo tres premios Grammy.
Después de este último disco los componentes del grupo se han ido alejando paulatinamente. El que mejor parado ha salido ha sido Sting, quien ha participado en varias películas, entre las que se cuentan 'Quadrophenia', Radio On'y 'Dune', y ha continuado su carrera musical en solitario con la publicación de varios discos, uno de ellos en español. El resto de los miembros de Police se han ido integrando en otras bandas o trabajando en solitario en ocasiones.
En el aspecto musical, que es el que más nos interesa, ha publicado varios discos, comenzando por 'The Dream Of The Blue Turtles' y 'Bring On The Night', mezclando el estilo de Police con su propio aire.
En 1987 publica el álbum 'Nothing Like a Sun' y una versión reducida en español titulada 'Nada como el sol', con clarírimos temas de denuncia y solidaridad, como la canción titulada en español 'Ellas danzas solas', en clara alusión a las dictaduras chilenas y argentinas.
En 1993 publica 'Ten Summer Tales' y en 1996 'Mercury Falling. Su siguiente álbum de estudio fue 'Brand New Day'.
El 11 de septiembre del 2001 ofreció un concierto ante un selecto público de 200 personas en su casa italiana de la Toscana. En dicho recital ofreció un repaso a toda su carrera, tanto en solitario como con el grupo 'Police' El resultado fue un nuevo disco, titulado 'All This Time'.

El cine fue otro de los territorios que invadió el compositor, bajista y cantante considerado símbolo
indiscutido de los 80.
Participó en Quadrophenia, la ópera rock de The Who; Radio on; Brimstone and teacle; Duna; La prometida; Plenty; Lunes tormentoso; The adventures of Baron Munchausem, con Robin Williams en 1988; hasta llegar a Los caballeros no comen poetas de la mano de su mujer, la actriz y productora Trudie Styler (que mucho tiempo atrás había participado del video de su canción "We´ll be together").
Sting, el más exitoso del trío Police, atesora cada vez más millones: el último paso del compositor fue la venta de todas sus obras, pasadas y futuras, a la compañía EMI por 30 millones de dólares. Uno de los contratos más abultados de la historia de la música, luego del de Elton John. Los dos premios Grammys que el artista inglés se adjudicó a comienzos del 2000 (Mejor Cantante Masculino Pop y Mejor Disco Pop) sirvieron para confirmar que su esperado regreso repitió la tendencia: todo lo que Sting toca se convierte en oro.
Sting ha logrado lo que pocos consiguieron: multiplicar como solista el éxito que lo había llevado a la fama como miembro de un grupo. Con 52 años ya ha vendido cerca de 70 millones de álbumes.
