Biografia de Backstreet Boys
Los “chicos de la calle de atrás” son la versión moderna de los New Kids on the Block (los de “Step by Step”). También son, como las Spice Girls, una banda diseñada a base de perfecto márqueting multimillonario. Pero además de haber inspirado en Internet decenas de webs contra ellos, son el grupo que más discos vendió en el mundo en 1999 y una "banda de chicos" muy peculiar: llevan unidos seis años cuando estos grupos tienen una esperanza de vida de dos.
Para la mayoría de gente mayor de 25 años, el mensaje del grupo es cero. Pero para sus fans, AJ (Alexander James McLean), Nick Carter, Howie D (Howard Dwaine Dorough), Brian (Brian Thomas Littrell) y Kevin (Kevin Scott Richardson), son el universo. Sus pendientes, tatoos y perillas chocan con el catolicismo continuamente publicitado en los agradecimientos de sus CDS. De hecho, los principios musicales de estos chicos fueron el coro de sus iglesias respectivas donde no cantaban, claro está, aquella estrofa de la canción Everybody: “Am I sexual?...”
El grupo comenzó con Howie D y A.J., que coincidían a menudo en los castings de publicidad de Orlando y se juntaron para cantar a capella. Después se les unió Nick. Luego llegó Brian, de Kentucky, quien llamó a su primo Kevin. Desde el principio, la música de los BSB fue una mezcla de pop bañado de rithim & blues y soul, inspirado en grupos como Boyz II Men y Color Me Badd. El nombre lo sacaron del cartel de un almacén de las afueras de Orlando. Sin saberlo, muy pronto su futuro abandonaría la periferia para situarse en el centro del show business, rompiendo su hasta entonces objetivo de ser unos simples animadores de Dinsneyworld.
Empezaron cantando en galerías comerciales, en el Sea World y en diversos institutos de Florida hasta que en 1993 apareció Louis Pearlman, un mánager que soltó 3 millones de dólares a cambio de que le entregaran sus vidas. Firmaron contrato con la discográfica Jive y necesitaron unos cuantos singles para darse cuenta de que Pearlman también se estaba quedando con sus fortunas. Cuando rompieron su amistad y su relación profesional, Pearlman se llevó una sexta parte del dinero generado por los BSB hasta entonces.
Su éxito comenzó en Europa, donde grupos como Take That tenían mejor acogida que en una norteamérica entregada al grunge. Los ex managers del grupo New Kids on the Block, Donna y Johny Wright, se hicieron cargo de ellos, dándoles forma de grupo dance pop con algo de hip hop. Su pasaporte de entrada en Estados Unidos fue "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)", de su segundo álbum.
Tal vez los Backstreet Boys no duren tanto como la energía de sus fans, que alaban en la canción “Larger than Life” (Más largo que la vida), pero dentro de la música comercial llevan una cierta trayectoria. El CD “Millenium” les consagró como los más vendedores, superando los sesenta millones de álbumes. Ahora con “Black & Blue” buscan sobrevivir a sus nuevos competidores, los N’Sync, por cierto, creados por su exmánager. En su nuevo disco llevan vaqueros, chaquetas de piel y la intención de madurar. Sin embargo sus principales gustos siguen siendo la ropa Nike, los videojuegos, el fast food de Burger King o películas como Star Wars y Pulp Fiction. Con bombas como “Shape of my Heart” tienen asegurado, como mínimo, seguir siendo unos superventas. |
